BDS provides comprehensive public defense services to more than 30,000 people each year, thousands of whom are detained or incarcerated in the city jail system either while fighting their cases or upon conviction of a Misdemeanor and a sentence of a year or less. BDS’ Jail Services Division provides supportive services and direct advocacy on behalf of our clients in the Department of Correction (DOC) custody, including their safety during extreme weather conditions. People regularly report a lack of consistent heat, and inadequate warm clothing while incarcerated in NYC jails. While BDS works with the City to hold the NYC Department of Correction accountable and address the inhumane conditions that exist in our jails, your generosity to purchase warm clothing will directly impact a person in need today.
